Coverage across both islands

New Zealand is mountainous and thinly populated outside the main centres, and coverage reflects that. Fiordland, the Southern Alps, the Catlins and stretches of the West Coast have real gaps.
The Great Walks, and why this matters
New Zealand's backcountry is genuinely remote and the Department of Conservation is direct about it: most Great Walks and alpine routes have no mobile coverage at all. The Milford, Routeburn, Kepler and Tongariro tracks are largely without signal.
DOC's advice is to leave detailed intentions with someone, carry a personal locator beacon on serious trips, and not treat a phone as a rescue plan. Beacons can be hired cheaply in most trailhead towns. Take that seriously — the weather in the Southern Alps turns very fast.
Driving, and how much data
New Zealand is a road trip country and the distances take longer than the map suggests — winding roads, single-lane bridges and a great deal to stop for.
A fortnight covering both islands with maps running constantly wants 10 GB at £12.99. There's also a 50 GB plan valid 180 days at £48.99, which suits working holidaymakers and anyone staying a season.

Will I have signal on the Great Walks?+

Does one plan cover both the North and South Islands?+
Yes, it's a single nationwide plan. Nothing to change when you fly or take the Cook Strait ferry between them — the crossing itself holds signal for most of the route.
