More than anywhere else in the Gulf, Oman rewards hiring a car and going. The road to Jebel Shams, the wadis at Shab and Bani Khalid, the turtle beach at Ras al Jinz and the drive down to Salalah are all self-drive propositions.
Many of the best spots involve leaving tarmac. Wadi tracks require a 4x4 and flash flooding is a genuine seasonal risk — a dry wadi can fill fast after rain in the mountains you can't see. Download offline maps, check conditions, and don't camp in a wadi bed.
How much data
A fortnight driving the north with maps running constantly wants 5 GB at £11.99. Add Salalah in khareef season and 10 GB gives more room. There's a 50 GB plan for longer stays.

Will I have signal on the wadi tracks and Jebel Shams?+
Patchily. The main roads up are covered, the off-tarmac tracks and deeper wadis often aren't. Download offline maps before you leave the highway — and check flash flood conditions, which are a real seasonal risk.
Is Salalah covered?+
Yes, Salalah and the Dhofar coast are well covered, including during the khareef monsoon season when the region fills with visitors.
How do I install it?+
