Claro across a small, vertical country
Your eSIM connects to Claro on 4G. Costa Rica is compact but mountainous and heavily forested, so coverage is good in the developed areas and thins quickly with altitude and canopy.
San José, La Fortuna, Monteverde, Tamarindo, Manuel Antonio, Jacó and Puerto Viejo are all covered. The national park interiors and the Osa Peninsula are much less so.
National parks and the driving
Corcovado, Tortuguero and the deeper sections of Monteverde have little to no coverage. Tortuguero has no road access at all — you arrive by boat or small plane — and coverage there is limited to the village.
The practical concern is driving. Costa Rican roads deteriorate quickly off the main routes, river crossings are real, and navigation apps sometimes route you down tracks a hire car shouldn't attempt. Download offline maps and take local advice over the app when the two disagree.
How much data
Ten days covering Arenal, Monteverde and a coast runs on 3 GB. A fortnight with heavy navigation and uploads wants 5 GB at £18.99. Most lodges and hotels have Wi-Fi included, which takes the pressure off.
Good to know
Questions, answered
Will I have signal in the national parks?+
Rarely inside them. Corcovado, Tortuguero and the deeper cloud forest have little to none. You'll generally have coverage at the entrances, in the nearby towns and at most lodges.
Can I rely on maps for driving?+
Mostly, with caution. Costa Rican roads worsen quickly off the main routes and apps occasionally suggest tracks a hire car can't manage. Download offline maps, and if a local tells you the app is wrong, believe the local.
How do I install it?+
After checkout we email your eSIM and a QR code. Scan it in your phone's settings, switch the line on, and you're ready — do it before you fly and it activates when you land.
Will it work on my phone?+
Most phones from the last few years support eSIM (iPhone XS and newer, recent Samsung/Pixel). Check your phone in Settings, or use our compatibility checker.
When does my plan start?+
Validity counts from first connection in the destination, not from purchase — so you can buy and install early without wasting days.
Can I keep using my normal number?+
Yes. The eSIM is data-only and runs alongside your usual SIM, so calls and texts on your main number still work.
