Orange coverage along the Nile and the coast
Your eSIM runs on Orange Egypt, carrying 5G. Egypt's population and its tourist trail both hug the Nile and the coastlines, and that's exactly where the network is concentrated — Cairo, Giza, Luxor, Aswan, Hurghada and Sharm el-Sheikh are all well covered.
The Western Desert and the Sinai interior are a different story. On a desert safari or a Mount Sinai climb, assume you'll drop out. Nile cruises hold signal for most of the route, since the river is the populated strip.
A note on calling apps
Voice and video calling over apps like WhatsApp and FaceTime has long been restricted on Egyptian networks. This is a national restriction rather than anything to do with your eSIM, and it can change — messaging and data work normally either way. Worth knowing before you promise to ring home from the Red Sea.
Sizing your plan
A week of Cairo and a Nile cruise sits comfortably on 3 GB. Add a fortnight on the Red Sea with daily uploads and 5 GB is the safer pick. Resort Wi-Fi in Hurghada and Sharm is generally decent, so many travellers use less than they expect.
Good to know
Questions, answered
Will WhatsApp calls work in Egypt?+
App-based voice and video calling has long been restricted on Egyptian networks nationally, which affects all SIMs and eSIMs alike, not just ours. Text messaging and normal data use are unaffected. The restriction has eased and tightened over the years, so it's worth testing on arrival.
Will I have signal on a Nile cruise or a desert trip?+
On the Nile, largely yes — the river corridor is where the towns and the network are. On desert excursions into the Western Desert or the Sinai interior, expect to lose signal entirely, so download maps and anything you need offline first.
How do I install it?+
After checkout we email your eSIM and a QR code. Scan it in your phone's settings, switch the line on, and you're ready — do it before you fly and it activates when you land.
Will it work on my phone?+
Most phones from the last few years support eSIM (iPhone XS and newer, recent Samsung/Pixel). Check your phone in Settings, or use our compatibility checker.
When does my plan start?+
Validity counts from first connection in the destination, not from purchase — so you can buy and install early without wasting days.
Can I keep using my normal number?+
Yes. The eSIM is data-only and runs alongside your usual SIM, so calls and texts on your main number still work.
