Safaricom, which is most of Kenya's network

Your eSIM connects to Safaricom on 4G. It's the dominant operator by a wide margin and has the deepest rural reach, which matters a great deal here — Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, Nakuru, Diani and the main highways are all well covered.

The Masai Mara has coverage across much of the reserve and at most camps. Northern Kenya, Turkana and the far northeast are far thinner.

A note about M-Pesa

Kenya runs on M-Pesa, Safaricom's mobile money system, to an extent that surprises visitors — it's used for taxis, market stalls, restaurants and utility bills. Card acceptance is patchier than you'd expect in a country this digital.

Worth understanding: M-Pesa is tied to a registered Kenyan mobile number, so a travel eSIM does not give you access to it. You'll need cash, cards, or a local arrangement. Your eSIM gives you data, maps and messaging — it doesn't make you part of the payments system.

How much data

A fortnight covering Nairobi, a Mara safari and a coastal stretch runs on 5 GB at £13.99. Safari camps often include Wi-Fi at set hours, and game drives are better without a phone in your hand anyway.

Good to know

Questions, answered

Can I use M-Pesa with this eSIM?+

No. M-Pesa is tied to a registered Kenyan mobile number and a travel eSIM doesn't provide one. You'll get data, maps and messaging — for payments, plan on cash and cards.

Is there signal in the Masai Mara?+

Across much of the reserve and at most camps, yes. Northern Kenya and the remote conservancies are much thinner. Many camps also provide Wi-Fi at set hours.

How do I install it?+

After checkout we email your eSIM and a QR code. Scan it in your phone's settings, switch the line on, and you're ready — do it before you fly and it activates when you land.

Will it work on my phone?+

Most phones from the last few years support eSIM (iPhone XS and newer, recent Samsung/Pixel). Check your phone in Settings, or use our compatibility checker.

When does my plan start?+

Validity counts from first connection in the destination, not from purchase — so you can buy and install early without wasting days.

Can I keep using my normal number?+

Yes. The eSIM is data-only and runs alongside your usual SIM, so calls and texts on your main number still work.
