Airtel around the lake and the cities
Your eSIM connects to Airtel on 4G. Lilongwe, Blantyre, Mzuzu and the main M1 corridor are covered, as are the popular lakeshore spots at Cape Maclear, Nkhata Bay and Senga Bay.
The Nyika plateau, the Zomba highlands and the more remote lakeshore stretches are thinner.
Lake Malawi, and what you'll use data for
The lake is the reason most people come — 570km long, full of colourful cichlids and lined with beach lodges that range from backpacker to genuinely smart. Diving, snorkelling and kayaking are the main activities.
Coverage along the developed lakeshore is workable. The Ilala ferry, which runs the length of the lake and is an experience in itself, drops out for long stretches. Likoma Island has some coverage; the crossing there does not.
How much data
Lodges around the lake generally have Wi-Fi of varying quality, so buy for the travel days. 1 GB at £5.99 covers a week; 3 GB at £15.99 handles a fortnight moving around.

Will I have signal on the Ilala ferry?+
Only intermittently. The ferry runs the length of Lake Malawi and spends long stretches out of coverage. Sort onward arrangements before you board — it's a slow journey with a loose timetable.
Is the lakeshore well covered?+
The developed spots — Cape Maclear, Nkhata Bay, Senga Bay — are workable. Remoter stretches of shoreline and the highlands behind are much thinner.
How do I install it?+
