Do you actually need this? An honest answer
The Maldives is our most expensive destination per gigabyte, and we'd rather explain why than let you find out at checkout. Data costs a great deal to deliver across a nation of scattered atolls, and that flows through to the price.
Most resorts include free Wi-Fi, and much of it is genuinely good — you may spend a week there and never touch mobile data. If you're staying on one resort island the whole trip, you might reasonably skip an eSIM altogether.
Where it earns its place: the transfer days. Seaplane and speedboat transfers, Malé stopovers, guesthouse stays on local islands and any island-hopping itinerary all leave you outside resort Wi-Fi at exactly the moments you want to confirm something.
Dhiraagu coverage across the atolls
Your eSIM connects to Dhiraagu on 4G, the national operator. Malé, Hulhumalé and the airport are well covered, as are the inhabited local islands and the great majority of resort islands.
Out on the water between atolls, coverage comes and goes. Seaplane transfers spend most of their time without it, which is fine — the view is the point.
Plan sizes
If you do buy, buy small. 1 GB at £10.99 covers a week of transfer-day messaging and maps for most people, with resort Wi-Fi handling everything else. Only go bigger if you're island-hopping independently or working while you're there.

Do I need an eSIM if my resort has free Wi-Fi?+
Often not. Most Maldivian resorts include decent Wi-Fi, and if you're staying on one island the whole trip you may never use mobile data. It earns its keep on transfer days, Malé stopovers and independent island-hopping.
Why is the Maldives so much more expensive than other destinations?+
Delivering mobile data across hundreds of scattered atolls costs far more than it does on a landmass, and wholesale rates reflect that. We price it honestly rather than hiding it — which is also why we'd tell you to buy the smallest plan that covers your transfer days.
How do I install it?+
After checkout we email your eSIM and a QR code. Scan it in your phone's settings, switch the line on, and you're ready — do it before you fly and it activates when you land.
Will it work on my phone?+
Most phones from the last few years support eSIM (iPhone XS and newer, recent Samsung/Pixel). Check your phone in Settings, or use our compatibility checker.

Validity counts from first connection in the destination, not from purchase — so you can buy and install early without wasting days.
Can I keep using my normal number?+
