Where the signal is — and where it isn't
Mauritania is mostly Sahara, and mobile coverage sensibly follows the people rather than the sand. You'll be well connected in Nouakchott, where most of the country lives, and in the coastal city of Nouadhibou. The paved corridor between them and the main towns along the Senegal River in the south are the other places you can count on a steady signal.
Away from there it thins out fast. The deep desert interior, the long drives between towns and the far east of the country are places where any network struggles, ours included — this is honest geography, not a fault with the eSIM. If your trip goes off the tarmac, treat data as something you'll have in town and not much in between, and download your maps before you set off.
Why Mauritania costs more than most
There's no getting around it: data here is dear. Plans start at £12.99 for 1 GB, well above what the same size costs almost anywhere else we sell, and the larger sizes climb steeply from there.
That's the wholesale price of data in a sparsely-populated Saharan country, not a markup we've added for the sake of it — the cost to us is simply higher here. We'd rather show it plainly than bury it. It still comes out ahead of switching your home network's roaming on for a week, and unlike a lot of destinations there's no regional plan that covers Mauritania more cheaply, so a single-country eSIM is genuinely the sensible option.
Which size to buy
Most visitors are here for work or a specific trip rather than heavy streaming, so data goes further than you'd think. A week of maps, messaging and the occasional upload sits on 1 GB. If you're staying a fortnight or leaning on data for navigation every day, the 3 GB is the safer buy. Will it work outside the main cities?+
In Nouakchott, Nouadhibou and the main towns, yes. Across the desert interior and on the long drives between towns, coverage is patchy for every network, so plan to have data in town and download offline maps before heading out.
