The lagoon is the point
Mayotte sits in the Mozambique Channel between Madagascar and mainland Africa, and is surrounded by one of the largest and deepest coral lagoons in the world — around 1,500 square kilometres of it, ringed by a near-continuous barrier reef.
Whales, dolphins, turtles and manta rays all use it. It sees a fraction of the visitors of the Seychelles or Mauritius, which is much of the appeal.

Near shore and on the barge crossing, yes. Out toward the barrier reef and on longer boat trips, expect to lose it.
