Mobicom, and the emptiest country on earth

Your eSIM connects to Mobicom on 4G. Mongolia has the lowest population density of any sovereign country — roughly two people per square kilometre — and mobile coverage reflects that with total honesty.

Ulaanbaatar, where nearly half the population lives, is well covered. So are the provincial capitals and the main paved routes. Everything else is a lot of sky and not many masts.

What to expect out on the steppe

If you're doing a Gobi tour or a horse trek in the Orkhon valley, plan to be without signal for large parts of it. Ger camps sometimes have a weak connection and sometimes have nothing. Drivers and guides generally carry their own arrangements.

This isn't a shortcoming of the eSIM — no network reaches most of Mongolia, local ones included. Download offline maps, tell someone your route, and treat the trip as the disconnection it genuinely is.

How much data to buy

Given how much of a Mongolian trip is spent out of coverage, buy modestly. 1 GB at £5.99 covers Ulaanbaatar and the connected stretches for a week or so. Only take more if you're based in the capital for a longer stay.

Good to know

Questions, answered

Will I have signal on a Gobi tour?+

Rarely, and only near the provincial towns. Most of the route has no coverage from any network — Mongolia is the least densely populated country in the world. Download maps and expect to be genuinely offline.

How much data should I buy?+

Less than you'd think. You'll be out of coverage for much of a countryside trip, so 1 GB usually covers the connected stretches. Only go bigger if you're spending most of your time in Ulaanbaatar.

How do I install it?+

After checkout we email your eSIM and a QR code. Scan it in your phone's settings, switch the line on, and you're ready — do it before you fly and it activates when you land.

Will it work on my phone?+

Most phones from the last few years support eSIM (iPhone XS and newer, recent Samsung/Pixel). Check your phone in Settings, or use our compatibility checker.

When does my plan start?+

Validity counts from first connection in the destination, not from purchase — so you can buy and install early without wasting days.

Can I keep using my normal number?+

Yes. The eSIM is data-only and runs alongside your usual SIM, so calls and texts on your main number still work.
