One of the great hiking islands
Réunion is a volcanic island roughly 700km east of Madagascar, and it is essentially a mountain range in the sea. Three vast collapsed calderas — the cirques of Mafate, Cilaos and Salazie — sit at its centre, and Mafate has no roads at all: you walk in or arrive by helicopter.
The GR R1 and GR R2 traverses are among the finest long-distance walks anywhere, which is the main reason to come.

Walking, and what to plan for
If you're walking into Mafate, plan on being offline. Gîtes are booked in advance and the network doesn't reach most of the interior.
The volcano itself, Piton de la Fournaise, erupts frequently and access closes at short notice — the local authorities publish current status. Check it before you drive up rather than at the barrier. 5 GB at £3.99 covers a fortnight comfortably at these prices.

Will I have signal hiking in the cirques?+
Patchily, and often not at all in Mafate or on the high trails around Piton des Neiges. Book gîtes in advance and download your route — the interior genuinely has no roads, let alone reliable coverage.
Why is it so much cheaper than nearby islands?+
Réunion is an overseas department of France and part of the EU, running French networks at European rates. Seychelles and Madagascar sit in far pricier markets despite being in the same ocean.
