Two networks around Freetown

Your eSIM connects to Orange and Africell on 4G. Freetown, the Western Area peninsula, Bo, Kenema and Makeni are covered, as are the main highways.

The interior and the forested southeast are thinner. Tiwai Island, the small rainforest research reserve on the Moa river, has limited coverage.

The peninsula beaches

The road south from Freetown along the Western Area peninsula passes a string of beaches — River No. 2, Bureh, Tokeh — that are genuinely empty by any regional standard, with mountains dropping straight into the Atlantic behind them.

Coverage along the peninsula road is reasonable. The road itself has improved considerably in recent years, though the drive from Lungi airport involves a ferry or water taxi across the estuary, which is worth arranging in advance rather than on arrival.

The airport transfer, which catches people out

Lungi International Airport is across a wide estuary from Freetown, and getting into the city means a ferry, a water taxi or a long road detour. Arrivals are often at night.

Having working data on landing to confirm your pre-booked transfer is genuinely worth the price of the plan. 3 GB at £23.99 covers a fortnight.

Questions, answered

How do I get from Lungi airport to Freetown?+

By ferry, water taxi or a long road detour around the estuary — the airport is on the far side from the city. Arrange it in advance, and have data on landing to confirm your transfer, especially for night arrivals.

Is there coverage on the peninsula beaches?+

Reasonable along the peninsula road and at the main beaches like River No. 2, Bureh and Tokeh. The forested interior and the southeast are much thinner.

How do I install it?+

After checkout we email your eSIM and a QR code. Scan it in your phone's settings, switch the line on, and you're ready — do it before you fly and it activates when you land.

Will it work on my phone?+

Most phones from the last few years support eSIM (iPhone XS and newer, recent Samsung/Pixel). Check your phone in Settings, or use our compatibility checker.

When does my plan start?+

Validity counts from first connection in the destination, not from purchase — so you can buy and install early without wasting days.

Can I keep using my normal number?+

Yes. The eSIM is data-only and runs alongside your usual SIM, so calls and texts on your main number still work.
