Mobitel across the island
Your eSIM connects to Mobitel on 4G. Sri Lanka is compact and coverage is good across the populated areas — Colombo, Kandy, Galle, Ella, Nuwara Eliya, Sigiriya and the whole south coast are comfortably served.
The hill country holds up better than the terrain suggests. Yala and Wilpattu national parks have patchy coverage inside, and the far north around Jaffna is thinner than the south.
The Kandy to Ella train
Widely called one of the world's great rail journeys, and the seven hours through tea country are the reason plenty of people come. Coverage along the route is intermittent — decent around Nanu Oya and Haputale, absent through the tunnels and the deeper valleys.
That matters practically because seat reservations, onward transfers and accommodation confirmations all tend to be arranged over WhatsApp here. Sort the next leg before you board rather than assuming you'll have signal to do it en route.
How much data
Ten days doing the standard loop — Colombo, the cultural triangle, hill country, south coast — runs comfortably on 5 GB at £7.99. A fortnight with heavy uploads wants 10 GB. There's a 50 GB plan valid 180 days for long stays.

Questions, answered
Will I have signal on the Kandy to Ella train?+
Intermittently. It's decent around the larger stations and absent through tunnels and the deeper valleys. Confirm your onward plans before boarding rather than mid-journey.
Is there coverage in the safari parks?+
Patchy inside Yala and Wilpattu. You'll generally have signal at the entrances and around the lodges, less so out on a game drive.
How do I install it?+
After checkout we email your eSIM and a QR code. Scan it in your phone's settings, switch the line on, and you're ready — do it before you fly and it activates when you land.
Will it work on my phone?+
Most phones from the last few years support eSIM (iPhone XS and newer, recent Samsung/Pixel). Check your phone in Settings, or use our compatibility checker.
When does my plan start?+
Validity counts from first connection in the destination, not from purchase — so you can buy and install early without wasting days.
Can I keep using my normal number?+
Yes. The eSIM is data-only and runs alongside your usual SIM, so calls and texts on your main number still work.
