Airtel across the mainland and Zanzibar
Your eSIM connects to Airtel on 5G, covering both mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar on the same plan. Dar es Salaam, Arusha, Moshi, Stone Town and the northern safari circuit are all covered.
The Serengeti has coverage around the main gates and many camps, thinning considerably in the western corridor. Ngorongoro's rim is covered; the crater floor is patchy.
Kilimanjaro, where the signal goes surprisingly high
Climbers regularly report usable signal well up Kilimanjaro, including at some of the higher camps and even near the summit on clear days. The mountain rises alone out of the plain, which helps.
That said, don't build a plan around it. Coverage is inconsistent, cold destroys battery life at altitude, and your operator's radios are the real communication system. Treat any bars you get on summit night as a bonus.
Zanzibar and data sizing
Stone Town, Nungwi, Paje and Jambiani are all well covered. The east coast and the smaller offshore islands are thinner.
A fortnight combining a northern safari with Zanzibar runs on 5 GB at £23.99 — though you'll be out of coverage for parts of the game drives and using lodge Wi-Fi for the rest.
Good to know
Questions, answered
Will I have signal climbing Kilimanjaro?+
Often, and surprisingly high — some camps and even the summit area get usable signal on clear days. It's inconsistent though, and cold drains batteries fast. Your guiding operator's radios are the real safety system.
Does one plan cover Zanzibar as well as the mainland?+
Yes. Zanzibar and mainland Tanzania are both covered by the same plan on Airtel, with nothing to change when you fly or ferry over.
How do I install it?+
After checkout we email your eSIM and a QR code. Scan it in your phone's settings, switch the line on, and you're ready — do it before you fly and it activates when you land.
Will it work on my phone?+
Most phones from the last few years support eSIM (iPhone XS and newer, recent Samsung/Pixel). Check your phone in Settings, or use our compatibility checker.
When does my plan start?+
Validity counts from first connection in the destination, not from purchase — so you can buy and install early without wasting days.
Can I keep using my normal number?+
Yes. The eSIM is data-only and runs alongside your usual SIM, so calls and texts on your main number still work.
