Viettel and Vinaphone, north to south

Your eSIM connects to Viettel Mobile and Vinaphone, both carrying 5G. Between them they cover the length of the country, which matters in Vietnam more than most places — a typical trip stretches 1,700km from Hanoi to the Mekong Delta, and you'll want maps working at both ends.

Cities, the coastal strip and the main tourist routes are comfortably covered. Signal thins out in the far north around Ha Giang and Sapa, where the mountains do what mountains do. Download your offline maps before heading up there and you'll be fine.

Skipping the SIM counter

Buying a local Vietnamese SIM means handing over your passport for registration — a legal requirement, and a queue at the airport when you've just got off a twelve-hour flight. An eSIM sidesteps the whole thing. You install it at home, it activates when you land, and your UK number stays live for the bank texts you'd rather not miss.

How much data a Vietnam trip needs

For a fortnight of maps, Grab rides and messaging, 5 GB is the honest answer for most travellers. Heavy uploaders posting daily from the beach should look at 10 GB. If you're doing the full month-plus overland run, the 20 GB plan works out cheaper than topping up twice.

Questions, answered

Do I need to register my passport like with a Vietnamese SIM?+

No. Passport registration applies to local SIM cards bought in Vietnam. Your eSIM is issued before you travel and needs no registration, no paperwork and no queue at arrivals.

Will it work on the sleeper train and in Ha Long Bay?+

Along the main north–south rail corridor, yes — coverage follows the coast closely. Out on Ha Long Bay itself you'll hold signal near the shore and around the main cruise routes, but expect gaps further out among the karsts.

How do I install it?+

After checkout we email your eSIM and a QR code. Scan it in your phone's settings, switch the line on, and you're ready — do it before you fly and it activates when you land.

Will it work on my phone?+

Most phones from the last few years support eSIM (iPhone XS and newer, recent Samsung/Pixel). Check your phone in Settings, or use our compatibility checker.

When does my plan start?+

Validity counts from first connection in the destination, not from purchase — so you can buy and install early without wasting days.

Can I keep using my normal number?+

Yes. The eSIM is data-only and runs alongside your usual SIM, so calls and texts on your main number still work.
