Buy the Italy plan instead. Here's why.

Vatican City is 0.49 square kilometres — the smallest country in the world — sitting entirely inside Rome. It's served by the Italian mobile networks, and your eSIM here connects to TIM, Iliad and Wind on 5G, the same networks as our Italy plan, at the same £1.00 per gigabyte.

You cannot reach the Vatican without being in Rome, and you'll spend far more time in Italy than inside the walls. In almost every realistic case, the Italy plan is the correct purchase and this page exists mainly for completeness.

We'd rather say that plainly than sell you a country-specific plan for somewhere you'll be for three hours.

Coverage at St Peter's and the museums

St Peter's Square and Basilica have good coverage, as does the museum complex. The Sistine Chapel is deep inside the building and signal there is weaker — though photography is prohibited and you'll be asked to keep quiet, so it hardly matters.

The dome climb, all 551 steps of it, holds signal most of the way and the view from the top is the most photographed thing in the country.

Practical notes for a visit

The queues are the real challenge. Booking ahead through the official museum site is the single most useful thing you can do, and having your confirmation accessible on your phone matters at the entrance.

Download or screenshot your tickets rather than relying on loading an email in a crowd of several thousand people, all of whom are also on their phones.

Good to know

Questions, answered

Do I need a separate plan for the Vatican?+

Realistically, no. Vatican City sits inside Rome, runs on the same Italian networks and costs the same per gigabyte. The Italy plan covers you here and everywhere else you'll be — buy that one.

Is there signal inside the Sistine Chapel?+

Weaker than outside, being deep within the building. Photography is prohibited there anyway. Screenshot your tickets in advance rather than trying to load an email in the entrance crowd.

How do I install it?+

After checkout we email your eSIM and a QR code. Scan it in your phone's settings, switch the line on, and you're ready — do it before you fly and it activates when you land.

Will it work on my phone?+

Most phones from the last few years support eSIM (iPhone XS and newer, recent Samsung/Pixel). Check your phone in Settings, or use our compatibility checker.

When does my plan start?+

Validity counts from first connection in the destination, not from purchase — so you can buy and install early without wasting days.

Can I keep using my normal number?+

Yes. The eSIM is data-only and runs alongside your usual SIM, so calls and texts on your main number still work.

Networks

Your eSIM hops onto the strongest of Vatican City’s local networks automatically — no setup, no choosing.
